The fusion between Jazz and Flamenco is one of the most exciting musical and artistic expressions emerging in the world today. In the case of The New Bojaira, the music flows like the water in the Bojaira, the irrigation channel built by the Arabs in Granada, whose name this band has taken as its own. An original and versatile fusion, blending the depth and intensity of both jazz and flamenco.
The core quartet is a combination of two Spanish musicians from the home of flamenco, Andalusia, pianist Jesús Hernández and singer/flute player Alfonso Cid; and two long-time veterans of the New York jazz scene, bassist Tim Ferguson and drummer Mark Holen.
The group also performs in expanded quintet or sextet form with flamenco dancers who have included María De Los Angeles, Auxi Fernández and Marina Elana and horn players such as Peter Brainin, Joel Frahm and Jorge Pardo.
The repertoire of The New Bojaira is rooted in the styles and rhythms of flamenco. A jazz approach allows the musicians of the band to open improvisational doors. In addition to original compositions by Hernández and the band, the group draws on a varied repertoire, including flamenco arrangements of jazz standards such as “Laura” and Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”.
Since its inception in December of 2013 The New Bojaira has appeared in many important venues in New York City and the surrounding area including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, Drom, and the legendary Deer Head Inn, as well as performing extensively at festivals, theatres and clubs in Europe including Festival del Lago (Atarfe, Granada), Festival Jazz Chinchilla (Albacete), Festival Jazz Xábia (Alicante), Auditorio Box Sevilla (Seville), Sala Clamores (Madrid), Colegio de España at le Cité Universitaire (Paris), Club Bab-ilo (Paris).

New Bojaira-CD Release Party - 8:00 pm
85 Avenue A
New York, NY 10009
USA
(212) 777-1157

The fusion between Jazz and Flamenco is undoubtedly one of the most exciting artistic expressions currently emerging from Europe.
The result, in the case of New Bojaira [Bo-hi-ra], is an original and engaging fusion, blending jazz improvisation with the excitement of flamenco rhythms and singing to create a powerful combination of energy and subtlety on stage, taking audiences on a fascinating multi-cultural excursion.

The core quartet is comprised of a combination of two highly regarded Spanish musicians from the home of flamenco, Andalusia, pianist Jesús Hernández and singer/flute player Alfonso Cid; and two long time veterans of the New York jazz scene, bassist Tim Ferguson and drummer Mark Holen. In addition, the band will join forces with virtuoso saxophonist Peter Brainin and the wonderful Flamenco dancer from Barcelona, Spain, Elisabet Torras.

As said by guest artist Claudia Valentina’s 2017 Latin Grammy award winning producer and percussionist, Felipe Fournier, “If you melded Chavela Vargas, Ella Fitzgerald and Gal Costa together, you’d find her voice there somewhere in between…”
Equal parts singer, dancer and jaranera, Claudia Valentina epitomizes the mélange parfait of modern New York as a California-born, New York-raised daughter of Mexican and Jamaican immigrants. Claudia Valentina will grace Drom’s stage accompanied by New Bojaira on a jazzy interpretation of her Latin American repertoire.

New Bojaira releases a new album, Zorongo Blu. Featuring jazz legend Randy Brecker on the track titled "El Diablo Llama a Mi Puerta". New Bojaira’s debut release is a collection of original compositions and jazz standards with the addition of the traditional Spanish folk song Zorongo which, when given a bluesy jazz/flamenco treatment, becomes the vehicle for the band's unique virtuosity and is transformed into the album's title track. Each composition on the album has a distinct and original feel, from a flamenco framing of Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” to Hernandez’s setting of two poems by Miguel de Cervantes “Jaleo del Celoso Extremeño” and “Farruca de Argel”. Jazz soloing is juxtaposed against the time-tested backdrop of flamenco rhythm.

“A great combination of Flamenco, Jazz and some interesting hard bop styles that I like quite a bit.”

Darek Mazzone-KEXP (Seattle)

“New Bojaira’s album is a classic celebration of the collision of all that is Moorish and Arabic in Spanish music with all that is African and American in Blues and Jazz.”

Raul da Gama-Latin Jazz Network

“… [Zororongo Blu] displays how adept and versatile the group is, how they can fit at home in multiple worlds without sounding like a parody of a distant genre.

Andy Jurki-PopMatter

In May 1977 three artists stumbled across a tiny storefront in the heart of Greenwich Village and thought it the perfect place to open a café. For two months they scraped and sanded, plumbed and plastered, and did the intricate dance one does with the authorities who live beyond the Village, and on the weekend of July 4, 1977, perpetually 201 years behind the US, they opened the Cornelia Street Café. Over the last thirty years it has quintupled in size, it has won numerous awards both for its food and for its performances, but it has remained at heart an artists’ café.

The New York Bojaira Project is honored to perform in this fantastic Greenwich Village venue.
